Superyachts – glamorous, opulent, seen in all the world’s most exclusive marinas. But, with size comes big risks. And that is where the qualified Superyacht Surveyor comes in.
The Maritime Training Academy is launching a new and unique qualification for maritime surveyors – the Superyacht Surveyor Diploma.
This specialised course offers maritime surveyors a formal qualification to open the door to the highly lucrative and growing niche market of international superyachts. Course Director Ian Biles says: “If you are already working in yachts, small craft or commercial shipping, this tailor-made course offers you/your surveyors a qualification that sets you up to expand your practice into further income streams.”
The Maritime Training Academy has designed the course with 12 modules covering comprehensive skill sets that will equip the prospective Superyacht Surveyor with the knowledge they need to give their clients their best counsel. This distance learning course takes 12 months to complete (a six-month extension can also be arranged) and students are recommended to do 10-30 hours work on each module. 27% of the total marks are awarded on the 12 assignments and 73% in the final three hour written examination.
The course is all online, yet students are not alone. The Maritime Training Academy ensures that its students are supported with tutorials, online assistance and networking with fellow students. In addition, tutors and authors are available to help with any questions or technical queries by e-mail and student forums.
Whilst a cinema room or sauna might normally be outside a maritime surveyor’s remit, they may well be included in a Superyacht Survey, so this course takes the student through subjects as diverse as international law, superstructure, helicopter and submarine installations, tech, toys and much more.
The Superyacht Surveyor Diploma is recognised by the University of Portsmouth and, on successful completion of the course, Superyacht Surveyors will be eligible to use the initials MTA Dip SYS after their names and the MTA logo on their promotional material. Ian Biles adds: “As the director of one of the world’s leading surveying companies, I am extremely impressed with the detail and scope of this course. Anyone passing this Diploma should be well qualified to start working in this highly competitive international arena and work on some the most complex, beautiful and valuable yachts on our oceans.
“With the speed of change in maritime design, technology, engineering and the superyacht market, it is absolutely essential to have an authoritative knowledge of what you are surveying. This course offers Surveyors an opportunity to acquire an unassailable advantage over their competition.”
